Bijni, now a sub-division of Chrang of Bodoland Territorial Area District, Assam is a historically famous and culturally rich place. The name “Bijni” comes from the name of the powerful Koch King Chandra Narayan alias Bijit Narayan who founded the Bijni kingdom in 1617. The place lost some of its former glory when the Zamindary system met its demise in the post independent India.
Pre dominantly inhabitated by the Bodos and the Koch Rajbongshis, the population of Bijni also comprises people of Schedued Caste and other backward communities in substantial number. Barring in the small town, the main occupation of the vast majority of the people living in the surrounding rural areas is agriculture and related activities. Long after independence, this relatively backward part of the erstwhile Goalpara District had as the centres for formal education scores of Primary Schools and a few High Schools. So when the bright and the ambitious youths coming from these High Schools wished to persue further studies, there was no institition of Higher Education in the vicinity where they could go to materialise their objectives. With the precarious financial conditions of their families discouraging pursuit of higher education in the distant part of the district, the majority of the youths of the greater Bijni locality had no other option than to cutshort their academic career and live with their dreams unfulfiled.
Just at that time a few visionaries with lots of energy and firm social commitment appeared on the scene to put an end to this distressing situation by establishing a local college which would provide to the local youths a gateway to a University education. With this objective in mind, the first formal meeting was held in the Bijni Gaon-Panchayat Office on 10th September,1996 which was convened and presided by Late Sunil Ranjan Ghosh and Late Jogendra Nath Das respectively. After a great deal of untiring and committed efforts from the people of Bijni the Bijni College came into being on 21st July,1969, a day regarded as a mile stone in the journey of man kind on the earth when human being first set foot on the Moon.
Although it initially started as ‘Bijni Tutorial College’ in Arts, the college began its regular function only from the academic session of 1970-71 after it was accorded the necessary permission by the Gauhati University. The college started functioning with six lecturers and seventy six students in the Bijni Girls High School building as the college was yet to have a building of its own. For a brief period Late Ramani Kanta Sarma, the Ex-Principal of Kokrajhar College acted as its first Principal. He was followed by Late Uday Chandra Das who became the regular Principal of the college then onwards. On 18th March,1970 the foundation of the college building was laid down by Kamal Kishore Sonowal, the then D.C. of Goalpara District and on completion of the same the college was shifted to its own building on 27th July,1971. The college got affiliation in February,1975 and brought under Deficit-Grant-in-Aids system on 01-12-1975. It was also included under section 2(f) of the UGC Act,1956 w.e.f. 24-04-1980.
The college celebrated its Silver Jubilee Year in 1994. In the same year the Science Stream was opened. Although it is yet to be brought under the Deficit-Grant-in-Aid system, it is currently availing an Adhoc Grant extended by the BTAD authorities. In due course of time, the college has now acquired its present full fledged college status with nine departments in Arts Stream and five departments in Science Stream.
